  1. Day 1

    Nairobi – Maasai Mara

    Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel or the airport for a 7:30am departure towards the Maasai Mara. The drive takes about six hours, with a stop at the escarpment viewpoint over the Great Rift Valley and a second in Narok town for last supplies. After lunch and check-in at camp, the afternoon is given to an introductory game drive in the 4x4 Land Cruiser. In migration season (July to October) the plains may hold large wildebeest herds with predators close behind, though river crossings cannot be promised. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  2. Day 2

    Maasai Mara Full Day

    An early start puts you inside the reserve by 7am with picnic lunches packed, giving the whole day to the Mara's plains. The search is for the migration herds, the Big Five and, with luck, a Mara River crossing; zebra, gazelle, topi and warthog are everywhere in between. The wildebeest move up from the Serengeti between July and October, and the timing of any crossing depends entirely on the animals. Lunch is taken near the river before continuing to the Kenya–Tanzania boundary and game viewing until evening. Return for dinner and the night.

    Crossings happen when the herd decides, not to a timetable.

  3. Day 3

    Maasai Mara – Nairobi

    The last morning starts a little later. After breakfast, visit a Maasai village to hear the songs and watch the dances, walk around the homestead and learn how a fire is started without matches. The programme leaves the Mara at about 8:30am, retracing the route through Narok and up the Rift Valley escarpment, and reaches Nairobi in the afternoon at around 3pm. Drop-off is at your hotel or the airport, so let us know your onward flight time when booking so the departure hour can be set to suit it.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

The Great Migration is a natural phenomenon, not a scheduled event. The herds move through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara with the rainfall, so their position shifts from month to month and year to year, and river crossings can never be guaranteed on a given date. Broadly, the calving months in the southern Serengeti fall around January to March, the western and central plains hold the herds from roughly April to June, and the northern Serengeti and the Mara are the usual focus from about July to October. We plan around the most current reports rather than a fixed calendar.
