  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Amboseli

    Leave Nairobi after breakfast and drive south across the Athi plains towards the Tanzanian border, reaching Amboseli in time for lunch at your camp. The afternoon game drive takes you out in a 4x4 Land Cruiser across the short grass and around the edges of the swamps that keep the park green long after the surrounding country has dried out. These swamps are why Amboseli holds such large elephant families, and late afternoon is when they come down to drink and bathe. On a clear evening Kilimanjaro loses its cloud and stands over the whole scene. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  2. Day 2

    Amboseli to Tsavo West

    An early game drive catches the mountain at its clearest, before the cloud builds — this is the hour for the photograph you came for, with elephants crossing the pan in front of the summit. After breakfast, leave Amboseli through the Kimana gate and drive east into Tsavo West, a greener and far more broken landscape of hills, thick bush and old lava. The afternoon takes in Mzima Springs, where fifty million gallons a day rise clear out of porous volcanic rock and an underwater chamber lets you watch hippo and barbel from below the surface. Dinner follows, and the night is spent in Tsavo West.

  3. Day 3

    Tsavo West to Tsavo East

    Spend the first part of the morning in Tsavo West, taking in the Shetani lava flow — a black, barely weathered spill of rock that local Kamba tradition holds was the devil emerging from the earth — and the views back towards the Chyulu Hills. Then cross to Tsavo East, and the country changes completely: open, flat, dry and enormous, cut by the Galana River and the long red line of the Yatta Plateau. Game viewing here is about scale and space, with big herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra moving across open ground. Dinner follows, with the night spent in Tsavo East.

  4. Day 4

    Tsavo East to Nairobi

    A final morning game drive works the area around Aruba Dam, which draws game throughout the dry months and is a reliable place to find elephant, waterbuck and a long list of birds. Tsavo East's elephants are famous for their colour — they dust themselves in the park's red soil until they look genuinely rust-red. After brunch at the lodge, drive back to Nairobi on the Mombasa road, arriving in the late afternoon. Your driver can drop you at your hotel or at the airport.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.

Your questions, answered.

How much driving is involved?

Less than most Kenyan circuits. Nairobi to Amboseli is roughly four hours, Amboseli to Tsavo West about three, and Tsavo West to Tsavo East around two. Only the final return to Nairobi is a long stretch.

Can this trip end in Mombasa or Diani instead of Nairobi?

Yes. Tsavo East sits between Nairobi and the coast, so finishing at the coast rather than returning to Nairobi is a natural variation. Tell us when you enquire and we will quote it that way.

Is Kilimanjaro always visible from Amboseli?

No. The mountain makes its own cloud and is often hidden in the middle of the day. Early morning and late afternoon give the best chance, and the clearest months are generally June to October and January to February.

What vehicle is used?

A 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography.
