Day by day

4 days in East Africa.

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi-Maasai Mara

    Pick-up is from your Nairobi hotel or the airport, then the road runs west and down the escarpment into the Great Rift Valley, with a viewpoint stop before Narok town for final shopping. Allow about six hours to reach the Maasai Mara. After lunch and check-in at the eco camp, an introductory game drive in the 4x4 Land Cruiser gives a first look at the reserve as the heat goes out of the day and animals move onto the open grass. Return for dinner and settle in for the evening.

  2. Day 2

    Maasai Mara Full Day

    A full day in the reserve with a packed picnic lunch. The Mara supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino along with abundant zebra, antelope, gazelle and warthog, and between July and October the wildebeest migration arrives from the Serengeti across the Mara River. Lunch is taken near the river, then the drive continues to the Kenya–Tanzania boundary and back across the plains, staying out until sunset. Sightings are never guaranteed, but a whole day in the 4x4 Land Cruiser gives the best chance. Dinner and overnight at the eco camp.

  3. Day 3

    Maasai Mara- Lake Nakuru

    After a slower breakfast, visit a Maasai village to see the homestead, hear the songs and dances and learn how fire is made without matches. Check out and drive north-east towards Nakuru, the second half of this holiday. On the way there is an optional boat ride at Lake Naivasha (extra cost, payable locally), a relaxed way to see hippo and the birdlife along the shore. Continue to Nakuru town and check in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

  4. Day 4

    Lake Nakuru-Nairobi

    An early breakfast and check-out lead into a morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, timed to catch the big cats while they are still active. The park is a rhino sanctuary, with both black and white rhino, and its alkaline lake is known for flamingos, whose numbers vary with the water level. Afterwards the 4x4 Land Cruiser leaves the park and takes the main road back to Nairobi, where the holiday ends with drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

The Great Migration is a natural phenomenon, not a scheduled event. The herds move through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara with the rainfall, so their position shifts from month to month and year to year, and river crossings can never be guaranteed on a given date. Broadly, the calving months in the southern Serengeti fall around January to March, the western and central plains hold the herds from roughly April to June, and the northern Serengeti and the Mara are the usual focus from about July to October. We plan around the most current reports rather than a fixed calendar.
