  1. Day 1

    Nairobi – Maasai Mara

    Depart your Nairobi hotel at 8:30am for the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with stops at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint and in Narok town for refuelling and final shopping. Check in at the eco camp on arrival and have lunch before an afternoon game drive in the 4x4 Land Cruiser. The Mara is known for the concentration and variety of its wildlife, and even a first drive usually produces plains game, giraffe and elephant, with a chance of lion. Return after the day's game viewing for dinner and your overnight stay.

  2. Day 2

    Maasai Mara Full Day

    An early breakfast, then a full day tracking game with your guide across the acacia-studded grassland and rolling hills of the reserve. Almost every East African species can be found in the Mara, and its extensive track network makes for excellent viewing and photography from the 4x4 Land Cruiser. A picnic lunch is served at the hippo pool, where the animals lie in the river through the heat of the day. Game viewing continues into the evening before returning to camp for dinner and the night.

  3. Day 3

    Maasai Mara – Nakuru

    A leisurely breakfast is followed by a visit to a Maasai village to learn about the community's culture and daily life. Then leave the Mara region and drive north-east towards Nakuru, with lunch en route. The main highway skirts Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha, both visible from the road as you climb through the Rift Valley. Check in to your hotel in Nakuru town (the programme names a hotel or similar) for dinner and overnight.

  4. Day 4

    Lake Nakuru – Amboseli

    After breakfast, a game drive in nearby Lake Nakuru National Park. The alkaline lake supports flamingo and many other waterbirds, and the park is home to white rhino, Rothschild's giraffe and plains game, with waterbuck and buffalo common along the shore. Then it is a long transfer south via Nairobi to Amboseli National Park, arriving at the safari camp for a late lunch. Check in, rest after the drive, and enjoy dinner before the night.

  5. Day 5

    Amboseli Full Day

    Begin with an optional pre-breakfast walk around the camp before breakfast. Then enter Amboseli National Park in the 4x4 Land Cruiser for a morning game drive among zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and various antelope. Return to camp for lunch and a rest through the hottest hours, then head out again for an evening drive. Observation Hill gives a view over the swamps, where large elephant herds and hippo bathe in water fed from Kilimanjaro, and in clear weather the mountain's peak shows above the park. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  6. Day 6

    Amboseli – Nairobi

    Breakfast is early so the day starts with a final game drive in Amboseli, when the air is clearest and the chance of seeing Kilimanjaro's summit is highest. Elephant families are often on the move between the swamps and the plains at this hour, and the light on the dry lake bed is at its best. Leave the park and drive north to Nairobi with lunch en route, arriving in the afternoon. The safari ends with drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.
