  1. Day 1

    Arusha – Lake Manyara

    After breakfast, drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park. Its main attraction is the tree-climbing lion, but the park's appeal is its variety in a small area: groundwater forest with giant mahogany and fig trees, open grassland, swamp and acacia woodland pressed between the Rift Valley wall and the soda lake. Game viewing in the 4x4 Land Cruiser takes in elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo and large numbers of baboon and waterbirds. Dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara.

  2. Day 2

    Lake Manyara – Ngorongoro

    After breakfast, a final game drive in Lake Manyara, then drive up the escarpment through Karatu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The afternoon includes a guided walk on the crater rim, with views down into the caldera: at about 20 kilometres across and 600 metres deep, it is the largest unflooded and unbroken crater in the world. Dinner follows, and the night is spent on the rim, where it is cool at this altitude.

  3. Day 3

    Ngorongoro – Arusha

    After breakfast, take picnic lunches and descend the steep crater walls, some 670 metres, for a full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The animals that live here permanently are easy to find: lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and, with luck, black rhino, while flamingo gather on the soda lake in season. Ascend in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha for dinner and the night.

  4. Day 4

    Arusha – Nairobi

    After breakfast, depart Arusha for Nairobi on the morning shuttle bus. The road runs north past Mount Meru to the Namanga border post, where you complete Tanzanian exit and Kenyan entry formalities before continuing across the Maasai plains to arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon. Drop-off is at the airport or your hotel. Note that this package is priced on request, as the cost depends on the choice of accommodation, the number of participants and prevailing exchange rates.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya and Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.
