Group-joining or private safari?

How a shared safari differs from a private one in cost, pace and flexibility, and which suits solo travellers, couples and families.

The difference

On a group-joining safari you share a scheduled departure, and its 4x4 Land Cruiser and guide, with other travellers. On a private safari the vehicle and guide are yours alone: you choose the start date, the pace and how long to stay at a sighting.

Choose group-joining if

  • You are travelling solo or as a couple and want the lowest price — the vehicle cost is shared.
  • You are happy to follow a fixed route and timetable.
  • You enjoy meeting other travellers.

Choose private if

  • You are a family with young children and need a gentler pace or shorter drives.
  • You are a photographer and want to wait at a sighting for as long as it takes.
  • You are a group of four or more, which spreads the cost of a private vehicle and guide.
  • You want specific camps, or to change the route.

What to ask about a shared departure

Ask how many people can share the vehicle, whether everyone has a window seat, and whether all passengers stay at the same camp — otherwise drive time is lost dropping people at different properties. Every one of our routes, including the group-joining departures, can also be arranged privately on request.

Journeys to consider.
