  1. Day 1

    Arusha – Lake Manyara

    After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive west across the Maasai steppe to Lake Manyara, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive explores Lake Manyara National Park, a small park with more than 400 bird species and a reputation for tree-climbing lions, which are rare elsewhere but regularly found here. Giraffe, zebra, buffalo and troops of baboon and blue monkey are also common. In the evening return for dinner as the sun sets over the lake and the Rift Valley escarpment, then the night.

  2. Day 2

    Lake Manyara – Ngorongoro

    After breakfast, set out with picnic lunches for a morning game drive and a last look at Lake Manyara's groundwater forest, hot springs and lakeshore before the drive up the escarpment through Karatu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the crater rim later in the day and check in to your tents. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the view down into the caldera, followed by dinner as the sun sets and a quiet night.

  3. Day 3

    Ngorongoro – Arusha

    After breakfast the 4x4 Land Cruiser descends into the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world: about 20 kilometres across, 600 metres deep and 300 square kilometres in area. Rich pasture, swamps and permanent water on the floor support lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena and, with luck, black rhino within a few hours' game viewing. Lunch follows the crater tour, then drive back to Arusha for drop-off at your hotel, where dinner and overnight are on your own account.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.
