  1. Day 1

    Arusha – Lake Manyara

    After breakfast, your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha for the drive west to Lake Manyara National Park. A thin green belt of forest lies between the Rift Valley wall and the ancient soda lake, and within it are elephant, hippo, giraffe, many baboon and, with luck, the park's famous tree-climbing lions. The lakeshore is one of the finest places in northern Tanzania for birds. In the afternoon drive up to Karatu and check in to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

  2. Day 2

    Serengeti National Park

    After breakfast, drive across the Ngorongoro highlands and down into Serengeti National Park, game viewing from the 4x4 Land Cruiser along the way. During the annual migration more than 1.5 million wildebeest and 700,000 zebra pass through the ecosystem, and if your visit coincides the plains are full of them; the resident lion, cheetah, elephant and giraffe are here year-round. A sunset game drive closes the day before dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.

  3. Day 3

    Serengeti National Park

    Begin with a morning game drive while it is cool and the animals are on the move, then continue game viewing through the day. Great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant's gazelle graze the plains, and the predator-and-prey drama that defines the Serengeti plays out around them: lion prides, leopard along the Seronera River, cheetah on the south-eastern plains, hyena and jackal. The day ends with dinner and time to unwind.

  4. Day 4

    Serengeti – Ngorongoro Conservation Area

    After a pre-breakfast game drive and a full breakfast, leave the Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Picnic lunch is at Oldupai Gorge, where the 1.75-million-year-old skull known as 'Nutcracker Man' was discovered and the museum shows casts of 3.6-million-year-old hominid footprints found nearby. Game viewing continues en route, and you reach the crater rim towards evening for dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro.

  5. Day 5

    Ngorongoro – Arusha

    An early start on the last day. With picnic lunches on board, the 4x4 Land Cruiser drops 2,000 feet to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural enclosure of pasture, swamp, forest and permanent water that supports up to 25,000 large animals. Black rhino are seen here more reliably than almost anywhere else, alongside the crater's black-maned lions, elephant, buffalo and hyena. Ascend in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha, where dinner and the night are on your own account.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.
