6 days in East Africa.

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi – Arusha

    After breakfast, pick-up from your Nairobi hotel for the drive south across the Maasai plains to the Namanga border post, where you complete Kenyan exit and Tanzanian entry formalities; have your passport and any visa or yellow-fever documents to hand. Continue past Mount Meru to Arusha, the base town for the northern safari circuit, and check in for dinner and the night. Your driver-guide briefs you on the days ahead this evening.

  2. Day 2

    Arusha – Lake Manyara

    The safari proper starts early. After breakfast you are collected in Arusha for the drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a thin green band of forest with the cliffs of the Rift Valley wall on one side and the shores of the ancient soda lake on the other. Baboon troops are everywhere, elephant and hippo are common, and with luck you find the park's tree-climbing lions; it is also one of the best parks for birds. In the afternoon drive up to Karatu, arriving in time for dinner and the night.

  3. Day 3

    Lake Manyara – Serengeti

    After breakfast, drive over the Ngorongoro highlands and down onto the Serengeti plains with game viewing from the 4x4 Land Cruiser as you go. More than 1.5 million wildebeest and 700,000 zebra pass through the ecosystem during the annual migration, and if your dates coincide the herds fill the view; the resident predators and plains game are present all year. A sunset game drive ends the day, followed by dinner and the night.

  4. Day 4

    Serengeti National Park Full Day

    A morning game drive starts the day while the air is cool and the animals are active, followed by a full day of game viewing. The Serengeti's herds of buffalo, elephant and giraffe and its thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant's gazelle sustain the predators the park is known for: golden-maned lion prides, leopard in the Seronera River acacias, cheetah on the south-eastern plains, hyena, all three jackal species and smaller hunters such as serval. Return for dinner and settle in for the evening.

  5. Day 5

    Serengeti – Ngorongoro C. Area

    A pre-breakfast game drive, then a full breakfast before leaving the Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Picnic lunch is at Oldupai Gorge, the archaeological site where the 1.75-million-year-old skull of 'Nutcracker Man' was found; the small museum displays casts of 3.6-million-year-old footprints discovered nearby. Continue with game viewing en route and arrive on the crater rim towards evening, in time for dinner and the night.

  6. Day 6

    Ngorongoro – Arusha

    The last day starts very early. With picnic lunches aboard, the 4x4 Land Cruiser descends 2,000 feet to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, where rich pasture, swamp, forest and permanent water support up to 25,000 large animals. It is the best opportunity of the safari to see black rhino, along with the crater's black-maned lions, elephant, buffalo and hyena. After the crater tour, drive back to Arusha, where dinner and your overnight stay are on your own account.

When to travel

Seasonal considerations.

Game viewing across Kenya and Tanzania is at its most reliable in the dry months, roughly June to October and again in January and February, when the grass is shorter and animals concentrate around permanent water. The long rains fall around April and May and the short rains in November; both bring green country, fewer vehicles and lower rates, at the cost of some unpredictability on the roads. There is no month in which this journey cannot run.
